Åberg had a strong first round at Colonial Country Club on Thursday. The Swede was four under and began Friday's round two strokes behind the leaders.
The second round didn't start as strongly. Åberg made par on the opening eight holes, then bogeyed the ninth. But three birdies on the following eight holes saved the day's effort.
Åberg came in at two under par, a total of six under. That's enough for the 26-year-old to keep up with the top battle ahead of the final two rounds.
Åberg is currently tied for fifth, two strokes behind leaders Akshay Bhatia and JJ Spaun at eight under. However, there are quite a few players who have not yet completed their second rounds.
