The review is extensive - it involves all of ABC’s broadcast licenses for more than 200 local stations across the country. The FCC says the investigation concerns ABC’s diversity and inclusion policies, but the timing is being questioned.
Trump demanded on Monday that Kimmel be fired for a joke about the U.S. first lady having the “glow of a widow-to-be.” Kimmel’s monologue was broadcast before the Washington Correspondents’ Dinner, where the president and first lady were evacuated in connection with an attack.
ABC would not have had to renew its licenses until 2028, but the FCC has a legal option to require the stations to reapply.
