When the eight parties in parliament agreed on 300 billion for a defense upgrade last summer, the government promised to resume talks on the future of defense in the fall. Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M) has not lived up to that promise.

– Why is nothing happening? Why is there no invitation? asks the chairman of the defense committee, former defense minister Peter Hultqvist (S).

The security situation has deteriorated rather than improved, which increases the pressure to show unity and determination in Sweden across bloc borders. Russia in particular is a concern, he believes.

TT has contacted the Ministry of Defense, which responds that it will return "in the near future" to the question of talks.

– If nothing happens, we will have to raise the issue for discussion in the defense committee in January, says Hultqvist.

He wants a continued dialogue about how part of the 300 billion should be spent, when, and on what. S believes, for example, that Sweden should build two additional army brigades after 2030, when the country should have reached four. According to S, the number of conscripts should be 12,000 in 2032, instead of the currently agreed 10,000.

To pay some of the interest and loans required for the renovation, S wants to see a contingency tax for wealthier people and higher capital taxes.

“Borrowing is not free,” says Hultqvist.
