In May last year, 1.5 tonnes were smuggled into the port of Helsingborg. Six people are now being charged with involvement in the smuggling.

"It's an awful lot of cocaine that these people have handled. We estimate that the total value is just over SEK 1.4 billion at street level," says Robin Sjåstad, group leader at the Swedish Customs' Criminal Division South, in a press release.

After the container with the cocaine was unloaded at the port of Helsingborg, it was picked up by a Lithuanian truck driver. Customs received an alert that a refrigerated container had been stolen and later managed to arrest the driver on board a ferry.

It turned out that the cocaine had been picked up by other people at a rest area and taken to an apartment in Malmö, where part of the consignment disappeared during a burglary.

All six are charged with particularly serious drug offenses.
