Tourists from all over the United States flock to the famous piers at Fisherman's Wharf. Everyone wants to see Chonkers, the 900-pound seal named after the English adjective for cutely chubby animals - “chonky.”
"He's like a Volkswagen! He's so huge," Oluwaseyi Akinbobola of Los Angeles told the AP.
Chonkers is a Steller's sea lion, the largest of all eared seals. The seals that usually hang out at Fisherman's Wharf are California sea lions, a smaller species that is barely half Chonkers' size.
The unusual visit is likely about food.
Chonkers is probably enjoying the buffet of anchovies and other things, Adam Ratner at the Marine Mammal Center told National Geographic.
