An abundance of ballot papers are printed in connection with elections in Sweden. Established parties receive ballot papers paid for by the state, corresponding to three times the number of voters in a constituency, region and municipality.
Parties can also pay for even more ballots if they wish. A total of 746 million ballots were printed for this year's election, according to Mitti. This is an increase of 36 million compared with the election four years ago.
But a change may be on the way. A parliamentary inquiry appointed to review the ballot system is due to submit its final report in August 2027. In an interim report in January this year, investigator Margareta Bergström suggested reforming the current system.
