Nearly 70 migrants died when the boat they were traveling in sank in Moroccan waters. 25 of them were from Mali, according to Mali's government.
About 80 migrants were on board the vessel, which was headed towards the Canary Islands in Spain on December 19. Eleven survivors were rescued from the waves, according to a press release from the department for Malians living abroad.
More than 10,000 people have died this year in attempts to reach the Spanish Canary Islands, stated the Spanish volunteer organization Caminando Fronteras in a report released on Thursday. Up until December 15, 10,457 people had died – an increase of nearly 60 percent compared to 2023.
