Another 40 children are feared to be trapped in the collapsed building in Sidoarjo on eastern Java. Rescue work is underway, but is being hindered by the fact that the building is unstable and risks collapsing again.
From within the rubble, crying and calls for help can be heard. To AP, rescue leader Nanang Sigit says that they are trying to provide the trapped survivors with oxygen and water.
Outside the school, desperate parents have gathered, waiting for news about their children. On a note posted on a wall, a list of the children who are believed to be buried in the rubble is written.
The collapse occurred when the students at the Muslim boarding school had gathered for prayer. Those affected are mainly boys aged 12–18.
