60 people are missing after two refugee boats were shipwrecked in the Mediterranean off the coast of Libya in recent days, according to the UN's migration agency IOM.

The first boat was wrecked on June 12. Five people were rescued while 21 are still missing. The day after, a second boat was affected, when only one person survived and 39 disappeared at sea.

"With many feared dead and entire families left in tragedy, IOM once again urges the international community to scale up search and rescue efforts and to guarantee a safe and predictable landing for the survivors", says Othman Belbeisi, head of IOM's Middle East and North Africa unit, in a statement.

So far this year, at least 743 people have died when trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, according to IOM.
