At least 50 refugees from war-torn Sudan perished when the boat they were traveling in caught fire off the coast of Libya, according to the UN's migration organization IOM.

The tragic incident occurred when a rubber boat with 75 Sudanese refugees caught fire off the coast belonging to Tobrul in Libya, says a spokesperson for IOM.

24 people were rescued from the boat fire, which occurred on Sunday.

Libya is one of the main transit countries for the thousands of people who try to get to Europe every year.

At least 456 people have so far this year died along the route and a further 420 are missing.

The civil war in neighboring Sudan has forced over 140,000 refugees across the border to Libya over the past two years, which means a doubling of the number of Sudanese refugees on Libyan soil.
