36 Migrants Rescued From Boat Off Dutch Coast in North Sea; Two Arrested on Suspicion of Smuggling

Thirty-six people have been rescued from a boat drifting off the Dutch coast in the North Sea, local authorities said on Saturday. Two others have been arrested on suspicion of human smuggling.

“This is the first time we have seen something like this in Dutch waters, but we still don’t know where the boat came from,” says Doron Wallin, a Dutch police captain.

The people on board, all men, had no ID and were not wearing life jackets. Before the authorities intervened, the boat was reportedly drifting without an engine, and the situation was described as “very dangerous.”

The rescue operation took place off the town of Breskens in the southern part of the country, across the North Sea from the UK.

The migrants said they were from Afghanistan and the suspected people smugglers were from Sudan.
