At least 30 people have died as a result of the major winter storm that has swept across the United States, according to the AP news agency.

The deaths have occurred in states hit by severe cold. Snow continued to fall in the northeastern parts of the country on Monday.

More than half a million households are still without power, according to the website poweroutage.us. The worst affected states on that front are Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Thousands of flights have been canceled and some schools were closed on Monday due to the storm.

A new winter storm could move in over the East Coast this coming weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
