That older men face greater risks at sea has long been known and is confirmed by accident statistics from 2025. Last year, 28 fatal accidents occurred in Swedish shipping and boating.
Of those who died, one was a woman and the rest were men. At least ten of the deceased were 60 years of age or older.
24 deaths occurred in recreational boating and four in Swedish-flagged commercial shipping, in accidents linked to the operation of the vessel.
The 2025 death toll is the highest in five years.
