The prisoners were discovered on Sunday after a riot earlier that day, in which four people were killed.
A statement from the country's prison authority alleged that the prisoners had "suffocated each other." The incident occurred in the Machala prison in the province of El Oro.
Previously relatively safe Ecuador has in recent years been hit by a severe wave of violence linked to organized crime, and the country's prison system has problems with overcrowding.
