A 26-year-old man is being charged with the high-profile murder of an ambulance paramedic in Harmånger last fall, reports SVT Gävleborg. He is also being charged with an attack on another ambulance paramedic a few days earlier.

A female ambulance paramedic in her 45s was attacked and stabbed during an emergency call in Harmånger in Nordanstig municipality, just north of Hudiksvall, at the end of September. Despite receiving life-saving treatment at the scene, she later died from her injuries.

The man, who was arrested at his home by police, has a history of violent behavior, often in combination with drinking alcohol.

The 26-year-old admits to the incident but claims he did not plan to murder anyone. He has also undergone a minor forensic psychiatric examination, which showed that he was not affected by a serious mental disorder during the act.

A few days before the fatal attack, he allegedly threatened paramedics with a baseball bat. He is now also being charged for that incident.

In parallel with the criminal investigation, an investigation into the employer's work environment responsibility is also underway.

The murder has started a debate about the safety of ambulance personnel during emergency calls, including the ability to "flag" certain addresses and people to warn ambulance personnel before they go to places with known risks of threats or violence.
