The jersey is from Gretzky's final season in his Edmonton era. That season also produced the last Stanley Cup title of his career.
The same shirt was sold in 2022, also at auction, for $1.45 million, equivalent to 13 million kronor.
According to the auction house, however, new analysis and photo matching have now been done on the game-worn jersey, linking it to several historical games.
Among other things, Gretzky wore that particular jersey in games one and four of the final series against Boston in 1988.
He also wore it against Los Angeles that same year when he recorded his 1,050th career assist and passed Gordie Howe as the NHL's all-time leading forward.
