The case has received widespread attention in Spain, which in 2021 became the fourth European country to decriminalize euthanasia.
In April 2024, the woman applied for assisted suicide. She was paralyzed from the waist down after attempting to take her own life two years earlier. In interviews, she has said that she had previously been gang-raped.
The woman's father has appealed the decision with the support of a conservative Catholic organization. The case was taken to the Supreme Court, which ruled in his daughter's favor in February. A final appeal from the father was rejected by the European Court of Human Rights.
The woman was pronounced dead at 8 p.m. on Thursday at a clinic in Barcelona.
