The dead animals, including 28 chihuahuas, were found in a dirty warehouse in a small community in Galicia. The illegal breeding operation had, according to the authorities, "extremely poor" hygiene with cages completely covered in feces.
An additional 170 animals, including exotic and protected bird species, were in a life-threatening condition. The living animals are said to have eaten the dead animals due to a lack of other food and water.
One person has been arrested, suspected of animal cruelty and wildlife protection crimes.
