24 police officers were injured in clashes with football hooligans in connection with the weekend's Rome derby between Lazio and Roma.
I am disgusted. It is unacceptable that hooligans turn a day for sports into a day for urban warfare, says Rome's mayor Roberto Gualtieri.
Around 2,000 police officers were present at various locations around the Olympic Stadium when the disturbances started, as Lazio's so-called ultras tried to force a blockade. The hooligans fired, among other things, fireworks at the police, who responded with water cannons and tear gas.
Both Lazio and Roma have condemned the violence. The Serie A match ended 1–1.
