At least 23 civilians have been killed in an air strike in a troubled border region in Pakistan, according to information from police and security forces, reports the news agency AFP.

The jet plane targeted four houses, which were completely destroyed, according to a high-ranking police officer who wants to remain anonymous.

Among the dead are seven women and four children, according to the police.

A security guard based in the city of Peshawar, who confirms the death toll, says that Pakistani Taliban have dozens of hideouts in the area. The police also say that there have been several attacks on security forces in the area in recent months.

An opposition member of parliament accuses the military of the attack being part of an anti-terror operation. There is no official statement from the country's government or military.

On Monday, about 2,000 people gathered in a nearby area to protest against the attack.
