23 Charged Over Nazi and Anti-Semitic Chants Before Hajduk Split-Ajax Match

Croatian police say 23 people have been formally charged with shouting Nazi and anti-Semitic slogans before the match between Hajduk Split and Ajax.

It was before Thursday’s Conference League match that Hajduk Split supporters marched through the city chanting Nazi slogans, some of which referred to the pro-Nazi regime in Croatia during World War II.

Dutch club Ajax has historical ties to the Jewish community.

Reactions were swift. Croatian politicians, human rights organizations and the Jewish community strongly condemned the incident, while the Israeli embassy in the capital, Zagreb, said it was “in shock.”

Croatian police said that six of the 23 people identified were in police custody.
