The clashes occurred last Tuesday when two armed youths from the Zafgawa region stole a motorcycle from a person from Ouaddai. Eight people were killed in the armed brawl, which escalated and expanded on Saturday. Then, twelve more people were killed in an attack by people from Zaghawa.
Local politicians write in a statement that they "strongly condemn these heinous acts" and demand that the authorities take tougher measures to protect the inhabitants.
The deadly clashes occur a month after 42 people were killed in Mandako in the southern part of the country. The region is repeatedly exposed to unrest related to power struggles, including between Muslim nomadic groups that fight over land rights with local settler groups.
