19-year-old charged with planning ISIS knife attack at Halmstad high school

A 19-year-old man is charged with, among other offences, aggravated preparation for a terrorist crime, the Swedish Prosecution Authority says. He is alleged to have planned a knife attack at a high school in Halmstad on behalf of the terrorist group ISIS.

The 19-year-old is also charged with aggravated participation in a terrorist organisation and public incitement to terrorism.

He was arrested in April this year, when he was 18, according to Säpo, which conducted the preliminary investigation.

According to the investigation, between March 1 and April 13 this year, the man intended to commit a terrorist crime by killing or seriously injuring people at the school. He is said to have intended to carry out the attack in the name of Islamic State.

“To prosecute someone for preparing a terrorist crime, I must be able to prove both that the act could seriously affect Sweden and that the perpetrator had direct terrorist intent. I believe I can do that in this case,” prosecutor Henrik Olin says in a press release from the Swedish Prosecution Authority.

According to Säpo, the defendant consumed and spread violent Islamist propaganda online and was willing to swear allegiance to IS.

“The case is a telling example of what the terrorist threat to Sweden looks like and the reality that children and young people in particular risk ending up in,” says Fredrik Hallström, head of operations, in a press release from Säpo.

The trial is scheduled to start on November 19.
