The suspect in the school attack at Brinell School is an 18-year-old man from Fagersta. He is a student at the upper secondary school and therefore had access to the building via a tag.
According to several media outlets, the 18-year-old's upbringing was marked by a lack of care. Court documents obtained by Dagens Nyheter show that he was placed in compulsory care last year under the LVU.
According to the administrative court, there were long-term and extensive deficiencies in the 18-year-old's home conditions.
Previously convicted
According to Expressen, the documents state that there were "risk factors in the 18-year-old's own development in the form of his difficulties with impulse control, managing his emotions in a positive way and his mental well-being."
The 18-year-old was sentenced in the fall of 2025 by the Court of Appeal to juvenile detention for assault after an incident at another school in Fagersta, where he allegedly hit and choked a schoolmate.
The motive behind the school attack is still unknown. Shortly before the attack, a picture was published on a Tiktok account that was created on July 4 this year. The picture has been published by several media outlets and shows a sword lying on a guitar case. Dagens Nyheter notes that the toilet interior and equipment match those at the school.
Celebrated school attacks
The TikTok account in question has also posted clips and tributes to school attacks and mass murders, including several clips linked to the school shooting in Trollhättan. The police say they are aware of the account and “will check the information.”
According to witness accounts to several media outlets, the perpetrator was wearing black clothes, a helmet and a mask during the attack.
The 18-year-old is now in custody on suspicion of killing a 17-year-old girl and injuring three underage boys during the school shooting.
