The cases have occurred in three districts of Ondo state in southwestern Nigeria. The mixture, which local media call “monkey tail,” was found to contain high levels of the toxic alcohol methanol.
Five people have gone completely blind and two have partially lost their sight. The first cases were reported earlier in September and the death toll has since risen, according to the country's Food and Drug Administration.
