At least 14 people have died in El Callao in southeastern Venezuela, where a gold mine has collapsed.

The mine collapsed in connection with heavy rainfall in the area. A search effort has been initiated to salvage the remains of the 14 deceased, local authorities announce.

The deceased worked in three different shafts. Before the bodies can be salvaged, large quantities of water must be pumped out of the shafts. There are reports that more workers may be trapped inside the mine, according to authorities.
