The accident happened on Tuesday night local time, when a long-distance train crashed into a stationary commuter train in Bekasi, West Java, near the capital, Jakarta. Photos show seemingly lifeless bodies pressed against each other inside the commuter train.

According to initial reports, seven people had died. A few hours later, the death toll had doubled. The rear carriage of the commuter train was reserved for women, and most of those killed were reportedly women.

"Everyone ended up in a pile inside the train, crushed on top of each other. I don't know how the person who was under me fared," said 29-year-old Sausan Sarifah, who escaped with a broken arm and a cut to her thigh.
