A 12-year-old boy who was attacked by a shark in Sydney, Australia, has died in hospital, ABC News reports.

The boy's parents confirmed the death in a statement on Saturday, saying they are "devastated."

The boy was swimming with friends and jumping off cliffs near Shark Beach in Vaucluse, Sydney, on Sunday when he was attacked by what authorities believe was a bull shark.

The boy suffered serious leg injuries and had been hospitalized.

In just 48 hours, four shark attacks occurred in the state of New South Wales. The other three people attacked were surfers, one of whom was seriously injured when he was bitten by a shark in Manly, north of Sydney.

The incidents occurred after torrential rain in the area, which experts say made the water murky and attracted sharks closer to shore. All beaches in northern Sydney were closed after the attacks.
