Ukraine has since the war began registered the largest number of people who have been injured or killed by cluster munitions in the world, writes the organization Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC) in an annual report.
Russia has used the weapons "to a large extent" since the war started, the report states. Ukraine has also used cluster munitions in the war.
At least 193 victims of cluster munitions were registered in Ukraine during 2024, out of a total of 314 globally, according to the report.
In total, more than 1,200 victims of such weapons have been registered in Ukraine since the beginning of the war, most of them in 2022. The report emphasizes that the figures are likely to be too low.
Cluster bombs, or cluster munitions, are fired from the air or from the ground. When they explode, they release many smaller explosive charges that spread out over a larger area.
Neither Russia nor Ukraine is among the over 100 states that are parties to the convention on cluster munitions that prohibits the use, transfer, production, and storage of cluster bombs.
