1,194 migrants crossed the English Channel in small boats on Saturday, according to British authorities' data. It is the largest number of migrants who have crossed the channel from France to the United Kingdom in one day over the past year.
However, it does not beat the record from September 2022 when 1,300 crossed the channel in one day.
Between Friday and Saturday, the French coastguard also rescued nearly 200 migrants in small boats in four different rescue operations. In one of the cases, the engine stopped working on the boat carrying 61 people.
According to the news agency AFP's compilation of official figures, 15 people have died this year when trying to cross the channel. The channel is one of the most trafficked places in the world for shipping.
