The man is suspected of having been a guard at the Stalag 326 VI K prisoner of war camp in Senne, North Rhine-Westphalia, and of having been guilty of "complicity in several murders through his activities there," according to German prosecutors.
Between 180,000 and 200,000 Soviet prisoners of war were held in the camp between 1941 and April 1945, when it was liberated by American forces.
“Of the approximately 5.3 to 5.7 million Soviet prisoners of war who were captured by the Germans in total, between 2.3 and 3 million did not survive,” reads a memorial that stands at the site today.
Another former guard at the camp has recently been suspected of crimes committed there, but died while the investigation was ongoing.
