A case of physical vishing, fraud, has occurred in central Eskilstuna during Tuesday afternoon. An elderly woman received a visit at home by a person who claimed to come from a government agency. By scaring the victim, the person managed to trick her into handing over valuable items and then disappeared from the scene. A report of fraud and impersonation of a public official has been filed, but there is currently no suspect.

This type of approach is unfortunately common. The scammers are very skilled and well-prepared and often start by scaring the victim in order to then offer "help".

The police urge people to always file a police report, even if the scammer was unsuccessful in their attempt.

People with elderly relatives and acquaintances are also urged to talk about this type of crime, not just once but repeatedly.

Here are some important points to consider:

• Never call a number listed in an SMS. Instead, call the company's central switchboard and ask if they have tried to contact you.
• Hang up the phone if you do not know the person calling.
• Do not open the door for strangers. No government agency will come to your home to take care of or collect valuable items.
• Never hand over a bank card, code or bank ID.
• Never transfer money on someone else's request.
• Be aware that the scammer can claim to be from a company, but also from an insurance company, or even from a government agency. If you are the slightest bit unsure: call and check.
