Pokémon fair in Mölndal
The police in the West Region carried out an operation linked to a collectors’ fair in Mölndal over the weekend, with the aims of maintaining public order, building knowledge and preventing crime. As part of the operation, a number of individuals were checked, including under the law on independent forfeiture.
When the police encounter someone with assets that do not appear to be proportionate to their known income, we can start an investigation. Therefore, following a decision by a prosecutor, we seized a number of collectibles on Sunday where it is unclear whether their possession can be explained by lawful means. The investigation is being led by a prosecutor. At present, there is no suspicion of a crime and no one has been detained. The items have a very high total value—we cannot give a figure.
In general, we know that many items at this type of event fetch high prices on the collectors’ market, which is why they have recently become increasingly interesting to the criminal world too. There are several examples of, for instance, expensive Pokémon cards being used as an alternative or black-market currency and exploited by criminals for, among other things, money laundering. The cards are easy to transport and sell, and can be worth very large sums.
It is of course unfortunate if this community is exploited by criminals. This has happened in other areas before, such as art, but now the trend seems to be Pokémon cards, and there may be reason for everyone with a genuine (and lawful) interest in this to be vigilant.
No further information can be provided this evening.
