Attempted Scam Against Elderly Woman.
The woman has received phone calls and SMS messages over the past day that are suspected to be attempts at fraud. Among other things, someone who claims to be from a bank has informed the woman that illegal transactions have been made from her account. The woman has been urged to click on a link in an SMS and confirm with a bank ID, which she has not done.
Police patrol has spoken to the woman during the day and will file a report regarding an attempt at fraud.
So you can protect yourself from being exposed:
- Never give out credit card information, codes or other sensitive information to anyone. Credit card information and codes are keys to your money.
- Never use your bank card or bank ID on the urging of someone who contacts you. No serious actor would ask you to do so over the phone.
- Be critical if someone calls and claims to be a relative or a distant acquaintance who wants to borrow money.
- If someone you don't know calls and you become uncertain, hang up the phone or ask to call back on a number that you find out yourself. This applies regardless of whether the person says they are a close relative or from a bank, a company or a government agency.
- Don't trust the person contacting you just because they have personal information about you. Scammers can find information on the internet to trick you.
