The latest time has seen a larger number of personal cars stolen in Värmland and adjacent municipalities in Västra Götaland County.

Common to the thefts, which have mainly affected owners of the Toyota Rav4 AWD model, is that all have been stolen without keys. The method currently used is to start the cars with the help of a technical device that enhances the signals of the original keys. These signals are picked up by thieves, copied, and allow the car to be started. The method is based on the fact that the car owner's key/key fob is electronically accessible to thieves' technical tools. Often, car keys are stored inside the outer door and can then be easily copied electronically by thieves. They do not therefore need to break in physically to get to the keys.

The police want to alert people to caution and thoughtfulness regarding how they store their keys, in connection with the current modus operandi. In order for the signal to be picked up by thieves, it requires that it is clear and unobstructed. To prevent or hinder signal capture, the keys should not be stored near easily accessible outer doors or windows, and in addition, should be stored in a shielding metal box or similar.
