In several cases, scammers are trying to deceive older people out of gold jewelry. Talk to older friends and relatives about this can happen.

Tillvägagångssätten are several. It can involve a person who sounds very credible calling and saying they will come and check the electricity or meter, or that they call from the police and want to help or warn about a break-in. Somewhere in the conversation or contact, the caller will ask questions about gold and valuables.

In one case, the person on the phone said that jewelry could disturb and contribute to electricity problems in the apartment. In another case, the person wanted to protect the elderly and therefore wanted to take the jewelry. The stories are many and new things are constantly being found with new excuses and explanations, but the motive is the same - to get at gold jewelry (and other valuable items).

The price of gold has increased and gold is relatively easy for criminals to sell on - which is why there is an increased interest and number of thefts and frauds of this kind.

Talk to your elderly relatives and friends about some basic attitudes:

* Do not let unknown people in until you have been able to verify that the people are who they claim to be. Ask for identification and try to verify it. Often there are phone numbers for verification.

* Never leave out credit cards, codes, or valuable items to someone who claims they want to pick them up. There are no banks or serious companies that operate in this way.

* If you let an unknown person in, make sure no one else sneaks in at the same time.

* Keep the front door locked when you're home, so that no one can get in without you noticing.

* Do not keep large sums of money at home.

* Be careful with bank cards, PIN codes, and even door codes. Do not keep the code in the same place as the card.

* Do not keep valuable items in plain sight, for example, in the hallway. Consider locking them away. Then a temporary visitor cannot take anything.

* Photograph your valuable items to ensure you can get compensation if they are stolen.
