January 18, 12:41, Elderly Crime, Vetlanda

Published: 18 January 2025

Ongoing fraud targeting the elderly.

12:17 Another scam targeting an elderly person is reported to the police. The perpetrators have used the same modus operandi that has been common in recent times. In this case, it is an elderly man who has been targeted. A person has called and said that someone has bought a sofa for 25,000 kronor in the man's name. Then, they offered to help, and connected the call to the man's bank. There, the man was tricked into logging in with his bank ID, and the scammers got a number of thousand kronor from his account.

This type of crime is highly prioritized by the police as it targets vulnerable people in a very nasty way. Other methods can include making home visits and posing as a government official or a craftsman. If the perpetrators succeed in getting into the apartment, they can either trick you into giving them jewelry and valuables, or they can search the apartment and simply steal what they want.

The police's advice is to always check who is calling, texting, or knocking on the door. If you're the slightest unsure – call and check via the company's or organization's central switchboard.

Never leave out bank cards, codes, or bank IDs.

Don't open the door for strangers.

Protect your loved ones – tell them about the scammers' methods and how to protect themselves.

In the event of an ongoing crime: Call 112. If the police can quickly be on the scene, it increases the chance of being able to prosecute the perpetrators.
