February 21, 20:51, Elderly crime, Ale

Published: February 21 2025

Under Friday, the police have been alerted about three different elderly crimes in Älvängen.

15:44 – An older woman receives a call from someone who claims to be from Klarna. The person says that a larger withdrawal has been made from the account holder's account and urges her to sign with BankID to rectify this. Fortunately, the woman did not do this. The incident is being investigated as an attempted fraud.

17:15 – An older woman is called by someone who claims to be from Swedbank. The fraudster gets the account holder to provide their bank details and transfer a larger sum of money. The incident is being investigated as fraud.

18:22 – A fraudster calls an older woman and says they are from the bank. They tell her that they will come to her home to value her jewelry. When a man later comes to her home, he is let in and steals the jewelry the woman has collected. The incident is being investigated as gross fraud.

Police have been on the scene, heard the victims, searched for suspected perpetrators, and carried out further investigative measures such as information gathering through door-to-door inquiries. There is currently no suspect. Whether the incidents are connected will be revealed by the ongoing investigation.

This is another example of fraud and elder abuse that the Police Authority has described and warned about in recent times.

How to protect yourself from crime: • Do not let unknown people in before you have been able to verify that the individuals are who they claim to be. Ask for identification and try to verify it. Often, there are phone numbers for verification. • Never leave out account cards, codes, or valuables to anyone who claims they want to pick them up. There are no banks or serious companies that operate in that way. • If you let an unknown person in, make sure no one else sneaks in at the same time. • Keep your front door locked when you're at home, so that no one can get in without you noticing. • Do not keep large sums of money at home. • Be careful with bank cards, PIN codes, and even door codes. Do not store the code in the same place as the card. • Do not store valuables in plain sight, for example, in the hallway. Consider locking them away. Then, a temporary visitor cannot take anything. • Take photos of your valuables yourself (do not let a stranger do it) to ensure you can get compensation if they are stolen. • If you are a victim – report to the police and seek support from people close to you. • If you have older relatives - talk to them and tell them how they can protect themselves from crime.
