Elderly women targeted by telephone scammers.

Police receive an alarm from an elderly woman in Åkers Styckebruk who has been a victim of telephone fraud. She has lost an amount over 100,000 kronor.

The con artist's method is unfortunately well-known to the police. The con artist calls and is very trustworthy and starts by creating stress and fear in the person being called by saying that someone is trying to sign up for subscriptions in their name.

Then the con artist has gained some knowledge about the victim in order to instill even more trust when they offer to help. It is things that the victim "must do" to save their money, and it ends with bank ID and other sensitive information being given out. After that, it goes quickly for the con artist to empty the accounts.

The police have a high focus on warning about the con artists' methods, but unfortunately, it still happens too often that they succeed in their intention and people lose their savings.

Quick tips on what to do if you think someone is trying to cheat you:

  • Be brave and hang up!
  • Police, other authorities or banks will never try to get you to give out your bank ID via phone!
  • Call 112!
  • If you have an elderly relative, talk to them about this and spread the word to friends and acquaintances. For every person who really dares to be rude and hang up, it's one person less who loses their savings!
