Elderly people exposed to fraud.
Two elderly people residing in Ödeshögs municipality have been targeted by a scam in the evening.
The scammers contacted them via SMS with a request to call a phone number in order to stop a credit that had been taken out on their account. When the people called the specified number, the person on the phone stated that they had arrived at the bank and that they would receive help. The affected individuals were swindled out of just under 20,000 kronor.
Warning for scammers
There are a lot of scams occurring both via phone and via the internet.
The police want to urge great caution when receiving calls or SMS from unknown persons.
If you receive an SMS with a request to call someone, do not do this. Instead, call the central switchboard of the company in question and ask if the information is correct. Never reveal your bank ID or account information.
If someone calls you and you do not recognize the person - hang up the phone!
If someone claims to be from, for example, an authority and says they want to come and collect your valuables in order to protect you, this is also a scam. The police or other authorities will not ask to take your valuables in order to protect you from theft.
