Scammers deceive elderly couples for millions.
Through a text message about a fabricated approved loan application, scammers try to deceive an elderly couple out of almost 2.5 million kronor.
The text message appears to come from a lender/bank, and since the elderly couple did not apply for a loan, they respond to the text message.
Thereafter, they are called by an unknown perpetrator who convinces the elderly couple that he works at a bank and will help them. But after they have logged in a number of times with bank-id, almost 2.5 million kronor are withdrawn from their accounts.
It is unclear whether the amounts have been withdrawn from the couple's accounts or if they have only been reserved. Until further notice, the police classify the crime as aggravated fraud.
At present, a number of different deceptive text messages are circulating on various topics, such as rental cars that are supposed to be returned, invoices for trips, and approved loans. In common, the recipients have not rented a car, have not booked a trip, and have not applied for a loan.
The police emphasize the importance of never responding, whether via text message or by calling a number stated in such a text message. If you suspect that you are being targeted by a scam, you should call the police on 114 14 or 112. Feedback to banks, etc. should only be made through numbers that you yourself receive from their official channels.
