A person who received a phishing SMS stating "the loan has been approved" has been duped by fraudsters into parting with a larger sum of money.
I the SMS it says that the loan has been approved and the SMS also includes a phone number to call for questions.
The person who fell victim to the scam has called the number and the scammer pretending to "help" to protect the money has stolen money from the person. This has happened, among other things, by the scammer posing as an employee of the victim's bank.
The police will arrive at the scene and talk to the victim and a report of gross fraud will be written.
**Think about this to protect yourself from phone scams:
**
Do not answer SMS – do not call the number in the SMS
If you receive an SMS with information you do not recognize, it is likely a scam. Contact only authorities and companies via their official phone numbers.
Hang up – if you're unsure, end the call
If someone calls you and you're unsure, end the call.
Regardless of whether the person claims to be a relative, from a bank, a company, a collection agency or a government agency. The sooner you hang up, the greater the chance you have to stop the scammer. You don't have to be polite.
Do not log in or provide codes
Never identify yourself with a bank ID and never provide codes from your bank card or credit card on someone else's request. Serious companies, organizations, and authorities never contact you and ask you to log in or provide personal information in that way.
Do not trust the caller – even if they seem credible
The scammer may try to stress you by saying you're about to lose money or that someone close to you has gotten into trouble. Do not trust the person calling, even if they seem credible and have personal information about you.
You as a relative or next of kin – here's how you can help
Talk about scams and the police's advice. Being mentally prepared before receiving a call or SMS is a crucial factor in not being scammed. It's also important to talk about the crimes to reduce shame and guilt that victims may feel if they are scammed.
