Scams against the elderly.

Police in Jönköping have received a dozen reports of scams, mostly targeting the elderly, on Monday and Tuesday. The methods used are somewhat varied. In several cases, a false SMS was first sent claiming that various services would be performed. The victims were then contacted by an individual who claimed to be a police officer. This person tries to deceive the victims into believing they are victims of a crime and that the selected individuals will receive help at home.

Police urge caution when and if you receive calls claiming that you have ordered a service that you know is not real. It is not rude to simply hang up the phone. This has also been successfully done by several people.

Examples of how scammers have tricked their way into the home
*Scammers pretend to want to sell a service or a product.
*Scammers pretend to want to leave a message for one of your neighbors who is not at home.
*Scammers claim to be from home care, healthcare, a security company, the police or another authority.
*Scammers claim to be a handyman or a property manager who needs to check something in the home.
*Scammers claim to want to protect your valuables and take pictures of them for you. Scammers also say that you will later receive your valuables back, which you never do.
