An elderly woman received a text message from a supposed car rental company. When she called them, they falsely claimed that she had rented a car.
When she spoke with the alleged car rental company, they linked her to "the police", where the alleged police officer instructed the woman to gather all her gold, which the alleged police officer would then pick up. At the same time, the scammers claimed that the police were looking for a dangerous man in the area.
No person showed up. A report has been filed on attempted fraud.
It can be added that in similar scams, the scammers often try to scare the victim by claiming that a dangerous person is moving in the area and that the alleged police officer, or someone else, will pick up valuable items and store them until the allegedly dangerous person in the area is apprehended.
