Zelenskyy says he is “ready for dialogue” ahead of today’s meetings in Berlin. In comments to reporters, he calls for US support for freezing the front line where it is, which the president says would be “the most fair thing” at this time.
He also seems prepared to give up demands for NATO membership.
“We are talking about bilateral security guarantees between Ukraine and the United States – that is, Article 5-like guarantees (NATO’s fundamental principle of mutual defense guarantees) – as well as guarantees from our European partners as well as other countries such as Canada, Japan and others,” Zelenskyy reportedly said in a Whatsapp interview with reporters.
During the morning, US President Donald Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner also arrived in the German capital.
Zelenskyy states that Kiev has not received any feedback from the United States regarding the revised peace proposal that was presented earlier this week, after consultations with European leaders.
"The plan is certainly not something everyone likes," he says, according to the Financial Times, underlining the importance of Sunday's and Monday's meetings in Berlin.
President Trump has recently increased pressure on Ukraine to agree to a peace deal. Among other things, he has claimed that Ukraine is at a military disadvantage to aggressor Russia and warned that the country could lose even more territory.
