Several advances were reported during peace talks in Berlin on Sunday between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the US delegation. The talks will continue on Monday ahead of a summit attended by several European leaders.

The talks between Zelensky and the American delegation lasted five hours.

"The representatives had in-depth discussions on the 20-point peace plan, economic issues, and more. Several advances were made, and they will meet again tomorrow morning," said US envoy Steve Witkoff on X.

Zelensky is reportedly prepared to give up demands for NATO membership in exchange for security guarantees from the US and Europe, reports the Financial Times.

In comments to reporters, he has called for US support to freeze the front line where it is, which according to the president would be "the fairest thing" at this time.

He also seems prepared to give up demands for NATO membership.

“We are talking about bilateral security guarantees between Ukraine and the United States – that is, Article 5-like guarantees (NATO’s fundamental principle of mutual defense guarantees) – as well as guarantees from our European partners as well as other countries such as Canada, Japan and others,” Zelenskyy reportedly said in a Whatsapp interview with reporters.

No feedback

Zelenskyy stated before the meeting with the envoys that Kiev had not received any feedback from the United States regarding the revised peace proposal that was presented earlier this week, after consultations with European leaders.

"The most important thing is that all the parts that we agree on with our partners must work in practice to guarantee security. Only credible guarantees can lead to peace," he says at X.

Some key questions are whether Ukraine can agree to territorial concessions and possible security guarantees for Ukraine. However, the decisive question is whether Moscow is prepared to agree to the revised peace proposal.

Kristersson is going there.

The actual summit on the peace agreement will be held on Monday. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will participate in person in Berlin. In addition, several European heads of state and government, as well as EU and NATO leaders, will join the talks.

President Trump has recently increased pressure on Ukraine to agree to a peace deal. Among other things, he has claimed that Ukraine is at a military disadvantage to aggressor Russia and warned that the country could lose even more territory.
