Extensive efforts reportedly aimed at combating corruption have been underway in China for the past three years.
Two defence ministers have been fired, and China's highest military body - the powerful Central Military Commission - has been reduced from seven members to just Xi Jinping himself and another general.
The purge has led analysts to question the military's ability to fight effectively.
On Wednesday, the president promised to strengthen and modernise the military. In addition, the party will continue “the critical, prolonged and comprehensive fight against corruption,” he said in a speech marking the Communist Party’s 105th anniversary.
He also reiterated that Taiwan should be placed under Chinese control.
