Pam Bondi, the US Attorney General, says Abrego Garcia has landed in the US to face justice, at a press conference.

A two-count indictment was submitted to a federal court in the state of Tennessee last month. According to several American media outlets, Kilmar Ábrego García is suspected of transporting undocumented migrants from Texas to other parts of the country.

The suspected crime is said to have lasted for several years.

AP writes that the indictment is based on an incident in 2022, when a car was stopped in Tennessee. The 29-year-old and several other people were in the car. The police suspected him of human trafficking at the time, but he was allowed to continue driving and the incident did not lead to any charges.

Kilmar Ábrego García's case has received a lot of attention. He was deported to El Salvador in March of this year. In April, the US Supreme Court ruled that the government must bring him back since he was deported on incorrect grounds. But the Trump administration did not consider itself to have any obligations to ensure he returned to the US.

Ábrego García, who was born in El Salvador, entered the US illegally in 2011. He was arrested but in 2019, he was granted a form of residence permit when an immigration judge decided that he could not be sent back to his home country due to threats from criminal gangs.

Ábrego García is married to a US citizen.
