Roger Federer has done it, as have Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. At just 22 years old, Carlos Alcaraz is now three match wins away from doing the same at the Australian Open, meaning he would complete a career Grand Slam.
Alcaraz, who has won the other three on two occasions each (US Open, Wimbledon and the French Open), now needs a win in Melbourne to complete the collection.
So far, he has never managed to get past the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, but following his win over Tommy Paul, Alcaraz has not dropped a set in this year's tournament. He now faces home favourite Alex de Minaur.
Surprise
The winner of the match can now face the surprise of the tournament, American Learner Tien. The 20-year-old beat Daniil Medvedev in straight sets and will now face third seed Alexander Zverev of Germany.
38-year-old Novak Djokovic has also advanced. His opponent in Monday's match, Czech Jakub Mensik, has withdrawn due to a muscle-related injury.
Djokovic and Mensik were scheduled to be one of the main matches during Monday's evening session.
Sabalenka through
On the women's side, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, competing under a neutral flag, has reached the quarterfinals. Sabalenka, who lost last year's final after winning the tournament two years in a row, beat Victoria Mboko of Canada in straight sets.
"She pushed me the whole time and played great tennis. I'm happy to be through," Sabalenka said after the match, according to AFP.
In the quarterfinals, Sabalenka will face American Iva Jovic.
