One person was killed and two were seriously injured in the shooting early on Wednesday, local time. All three were in a car and were individuals who had been detained by the US immigration authority, ICE.
One of the injured was a Mexican citizen, according to a statement from Mexico's foreign ministry.
The shooter, who had positioned himself on a roof with a weapon, took his own life after the act.
In American media, he is identified as a 29-year-old Texas resident who, according to his family, did not have any "strong feelings" regarding ICE or politics in general. However, the words "anti-ICE" were engraved on the cartridges found after the shooting, according to the FBI.
Resembles church shooting
The motive is not clear, but the shooting is nonetheless eliciting strong political reactions.
President Donald Trump lays the blame on the Democrats and the political left in a Truth Social post. Vice President JD Vance claims that the shooter was a "violent left-wing extremist" who was apparently politically motivated, reports NBC News.
The act occurred two weeks to the day after the shooting of right-wing debater Charlie Kirk. Shootings with multiple victims occur almost daily in the USA, but the Dallas act is attracting extra attention because the method resembles the shooting of Kirk. In that case as well, the shooter was positioned on a roof and had engraved political messages on the cartridges.
Increase resources
ICE, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is a US federal police authority with the task of protecting the USA from cross-border crime and illegal immigration.
The authority has been provided with a record budget to be able to carry out Donald Trump's promised mass deportations of undocumented migrants in the USA.
After the shooting, Kristi Noem, minister for internal security, promises in an interview with Fox News to further increase the authority's staffing.
