The number of ads for sale is absolutely exploding these days. And it's having a clear effect, the statistics show.
During Black Week (the last week of November) last year, Swedish households spent SEK 11.7 billion more than during a normal week this year, which was SEK 48 billion. This was an extra high last year, which may be related to when wages were paid. Over the past six years, consumption during Black Week has averaged SEK 7.2 billion higher than normal.
Calculated per household, this corresponds to around SEK 1,500 more.
The peak is reached during Black Friday itself (the Friday during Black Week). Last year, consumption amounted to eleven billion kronor on Friday, about four billion more than an average day.
This is primarily about consumer durables, such as electronics and the like.
Do you then shop less during the surrounding weeks?
When this week is over, people start shopping for Christmas. Those weeks are also above the average week, says Daniel Lennartsson, statistician at Statistics Sweden.
But over time, November has stolen part of the Christmas month of December. And then we shop significantly less during January and February. So overall over the year, consumption only increases marginally.
Last year, trade was higher during the last week of November than during the week before Christmas, according to Statistics Sweden's figures.
